Google Introduces Imperceptible Watermark for Detection of AI-Created Images


In a bid to counter the propagation of misinformation, Google has introduced an unseen, enduring watermarking technique for images, enabling the identification of images generated by artificial intelligence.


Termed SynthID, this technology seamlessly embeds a watermark within images produced by Imagen, one of Google's latest text-to-image generators. Notably, this AI-generated label remains intact even after alterations like the addition of filters or changes to colors.


SynthID also possesses the ability to scan incoming images, gauging the likelihood of their creation by Imagen through watermark detection with varying levels of certainty: detected, not detected, and potentially detected.


"While acknowledging its imperfections, our in-house trials indicate that it successfully stands up against numerous common image modifications," Google stated in a blog post on Tuesday.

A beta rendition of SynthID is presently accessible to select customers of Vertex AI, Google's developer-oriented generative AI platform. Developed in collaboration between Google's DeepMind unit and Google Cloud, SynthID is anticipated to undergo further refinement and could potentially extend its application to other Google products or third-party domains.


Watermarks serve as digital signatures capable of identifying the originator or proprietor of an image. Their utility extends to tracking image movement and safeguarding images against tampering.

In the context of AI-generated images, watermarks offer a means to curtail the spread of misinformation. By designating images as AI-generated, SynthID empowers users to exercise increased discernment concerning the information they consume.
